Recognition by WHO in Vision 2020

Data suggest that a significant number of individuals are functionally blind due to uncorrected high refractive error. It is estimated that 12.5 percent of global blindness and 59.4 percent of low vision are due to uncorrected refractive error. That is why refractive error and low vision are now recognized by WHO as an integral part of an effective prevention of blindness program, and are explicitly included in Vision 2020 Right to Sight initiative.
