Optometrists are Primary Health Care practitioner of Eye and Visual system

Primary care practitioner means the practitioner of first contact. That is, the patient attends the practitioner directly, without going through a triage or other gatekeeper system, or a referring practitioner.

Primary Eye care practice of optometry include eye examinations, counseling and education about eye health, prescribing and dispensing eyeglasses, and prescribing medication.

Why are optometrists the point of first contact? Simple, because they are accessible, and because they are competent to satisfy the vision care needs of at least 95% of the people
