Slide 14 TLERC
In the fiscal year, ending 2002 Lions Recycling Centers collected 6 million pairs of used eyeglasses and donated more than 3 million of them to developing nations. Most prominent is the Texas Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center located in Midland Texas. Managed by octogenarian Ike Fitzgerald, it is probably one of the largest of its kind.
A few weeks ago, I toured this facility, a former movie theater that is used to store eyeglasses, optical instruments, serve as a meeting hall, and as a training center. Anyone wishing to understand the rudiments of an eye mission may sign up for classes. They are held one weekend a month, free of charge. LIONS International funds the facility. It has four employees and numerous volunteers. Texas Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center is building eye clinics and optical labs in Brazil, Mexico, Honduras, and Guyana. The Center provides measurements for pupillary distance to avoid induced prism.
